This symbol known as the Macedonian Sun, the symbol of a stylized sun found on coins, walls, craters, vessels and visual arts of ancient Macedonia, to this day on many 12th century Macedonian Orthodox churches. The symbol features sixteen rays of light emanating from a central rosette. The symbol was part of the emblem of the Argead dynasty, the Macedonian royal house, which reigned with the Macedonian peninsula now known as the “Balkans” and the Macedonian Empire of Philip II and Alexander III for more than a thousand years.
The Macedonian Sun continues to be a symbol for the Macedonian population around the world. It has a yellow symbol on an intense red base.
